OK... am I the only one who is fed up with not being able to read the damn scoreboard?
What do we gotta do to get some freakin light bulbs in the thing? Am I missing something here? is it expensive or difficult to replace lights in the scoreboard?

I think they converted it to braille.
Thats a great question. They get you to expect less and less until you stop expecting anything from them.
I'll ask about this Saturday.

A little competition for the rink would be awesome. Hopefully the rumors I've heard are true and there will be some soon.
Has anyone checked into playing elsewhere like Ames? I guess the service isn't bad enough yet to go somewhere else, but if something else came along that was affordable and convenient, I sure wouldn't be loyal to MISF. Or even if it was inconvenient but a better product, I'd consider it.

What are the rumors? Isn't spreading rumors what internet forums are all about?

How about the wonderful parking lot that they fixed last year? They try to save a penny and it ends up costing a dollar later on. It sucks as a goalie trying to help my team out because I like to call out when it is getting close to the end of a period.

I was in Fargo a couple of weeks ago watching my son play. A dad from Grand Forks whose kid was playing in the next game struck up a conversation with me, said he works for Acme Tools, and that the same architect who designed their building that's down on SW 9th (?) in the RiverPoint area also was working on Des Moines' new ice rink. He didn't seem to know much about it except that it's going to be really nice. I thought he was talking about Wells Fargo, but he assured me it was something planned for the future, not the Well. When I've mentioned it to a couple of other people here who I thought might know something, my impression was that some people were talking about doing something but as far as I could tell there was nothing more than talk so far. I'm not holding my breath on anything. I'll believe it when I skate on it.

The word on the street is that the Eastern Burbs will be getting a rink of their own. This rink will have dedicated hockey ice, according to the rumor. Imagine that, a rink without toe pick holes. Wouldn't it be nice? I also would find a new local in a heartbeat. Nothing against Tim or anybody, it's just that the MISF is the second worse rink I've played in consistently (after old Ames). The ice is not level, the parking lot is a nightmare (I saw a Kia disappear on Thursday), the locker rooms are small and smell like staph, the stands are twenty degrees colder than igloos, the bathrooms make crapping in the street attractive, the benches shred my breezers week in and week out, and the guys who are uber loyal to MISF seem to be douche bags. On the other hand, the beer is cold and cheap and Tim is a super nice guy... Other rumors are also floating like a rogue "beer" league (meaning for the love of the game not the love of competition) possibly existing in one or both of the other existing (and often empty) facilities. Who knows what is true and what isn't? Rumors are the backbone of the internet. There has even been talk of a Gray's lake outdoor league...

Yeah, the ice definitely sucks. I still wonder if I may have a lawsuit against the rink for my screwed up ankle. It's been about a year since they told me I should have ankle surgery after I screwed mine up. It would have been fine if the rink would have been consientious enough to replace the board brush on the Zamboni--whoops, I mean Olympia--instead of leaving a half inch lip around the boards that my blade caught on causing my foot to turn completely backwards. If I wanted to pursue it I'm sure I could find some ambulance chaser to file a suit for pain and suffering, lost commissions, medical bills, etc.

AMEN!!! I would go to another rink in a heartbeat. After dealing with the "management staff" at MISF, I would be willing to pay more to play at a different rink as long as they actually care about the people more than money. Every time I go to MISF, I have to shake my head thinking that they just repaired the parking lot a year ago. It shows that they use the cheapest materials possible and don't care about their patrons...only making money. QCI - Goalie #42 Killer Tomatoes - Mid-season Aquisition Chops League - Skater

According to Tammy in the lounge, they have replaced the bulbs multiple times but they keep burning out. They are claiming it's an electirical problem they don't know how to fix.

As far as the scoreboard goes they have had an electrition look at it and would be cost prohibitive to fix.
Just to throw this out there but this is how most men's leagues work in established hockey towns: Someone rents out ice time. That person runs the league and most rinks have little to do with the league. I don't know if the rink would allow this or if anyone would have the time and money to start a private league, but this might be a way to go. I think this would work well with the C&D leagues not so much with A&B.

It was actually talked about to simply rent the rink and have our own league, but if I remember correctly, the rink refused because it wanted control over the leagues. Not 100% on that, but I think I heard that is the way it went down.
That strikes me as funny that fixing a scoreboard is cost prohibitive, I mean, they are a hockey rink after all. Soon, it will be cost prohibitive to paint lines in the ice since you don't really "need" them to play hockey. lol
It is a good thing MISF doesn't really have any competition at the moment, otherwise, they would be out of business.

What happens with that cost prohibitive scoreboard when the Midget Buc Bowl comes to town in October? They use both sheets then. I'm pretty sure the scoreboard is important for that... I keep hearing rumors that a private league could happen. There are two other sheets of ice that sit empty on Sundays... I've also heard rumors of a new hockey exclusive rink in the eastern burbs. Wouldn't be any farther for some us to drive to play on smoother ice...

Is anyone really shocked about how much the rink atmosphere has degraded? Yes, the beer is still cheap and cold, but so is everything else. The nets are shabby (not that I ever find the back of it...), the locker rooms are arguably unsafe to walk barefoot, the ice is terrible, and the equipment is in disrepair. I was actually embarrassed to have out-of-town teams come and play on our ice. If this is a representation of the quality of our local recreational hockey program in Des Moines, I'm surprised anyone would want to come to town.
I keep hearing everyone talking about two other rinks: where are they? And the prospect of a new rink on the Eastside would be awesome. I've been a long-time proponent of MISF, but as of late, it's a lost cause.

That would be great if a new rink was built on the east side of town as long as the manager cares about the rink. That is the big part of problem with Metro. Countless times, I have had to warn players about large chunks in the ice and it has been a looooong time since I have played on "good" ice at that arena. I had hoped that getting a fancy new zamboni would help, but it didn't. QCI - Goalie #42 Killer Tomatoes - Mid-season Aquisition Chops League - Skater

Oh, of course, those. I was thinking there were some "public" ones, such as MISF, that were readily available.
If I win the lottery, Des Moines' getting a nice new rink dedicated to recreational hockey. Or maybe just buy MISF and actually do something about the crap conditions.
