Anyone interested in some pond hockey this weekend? I'm going to try at whatever that park is (McGiver???) south of downtown where some of us played on the coldest day of the year last year, probably on Saturday afternoon, maybe Sunday. I've already told my kids we'd go out, so I'll be there sometime, it's just a matter of when and how many other people show up. I've got a snowblower and one net.
It's a short time livin' and a long time in the ground.

I just got an email from Altoona Parks and Rec. They said that they have the lighted outdoor ice rink at Sam Wise Youth Complex ready to go. I'm not sure where in the complex the rink is, but here's a map showing the location of the complex. Google Maps- Sam Wise Youth Complex

As of yesterday, the red flags were still up on the southside. Given that it is supposed to be in the mid 30s on Saturday, they probably still will be. We need at least one more week of solid cold to have the green flags up I think. Sadly, that means no pond hockey.

Red flag is still up as of noon. I would bet the ice is thick enough, but clearing the snow off a pond and checking the ice thickness is probably a ways down the priority list with all the snow we've gotten. According to this guide, I'm thinking we need about 6 inches to be safe. It's a short time livin' and a long time in the ground.

Im in for playing. Cant wait. The park youre referring to is Mac Rae park on SW 9th. Last years schedule for Saturday mornings worked out great for me.

Looks like it's almost ready at MacRae. They cleaned a bunch of snow off of it this morning but still have the red flag up. I think the ice is thick enough, but there's water draining from somewhere uphill that's on top of the ice at the west end. Now that the snow is off and not insulating the ice any more, I'm thinking it will freeze up pretty quickly.
I'm hoping to get out tomorrow afternoon or evening with my kids if I can get the office closed up early, all my Christmas shopping done, etc. I'll be gone Friday and Saturday but back Sunday afternoon.

The bad part is that the playable ice will not last after tomorrow since we are looking at the mid 40s on Friday...

I think it would be a lot of fun to play some pond hockey.

I'll be in Sioux City for this weekend, but want to get out ASAP after that. Tonight will be my first time on the ice in almost a month. Thank god I don't have any skills to lose!
